Thanks for your input, Conor. Yes, William Faulkner is credited with first having said, “Kill your darlings,” which was later co-opted by Stephen King. I just finished Born to Run and in the last few pages of the book the author acknowledges a few people that helped. His last acknowledgement is to a friend who “lets him know where his stories are valuable, and where a tangent is self-indulgent”. I loved this phrase. I know how hard it is to let go of the ideas that are important to me, but are not necessary to the flow of the story. I wrote a short answer on quora “What are the keys to telling a good story” recently – and 1 central, strong character… no tangents… dramatic movement are all necessary. Clearly they were missing some of these bits and pieces in the Into the Storm book
